At the annual conference organized by the Hungarian Water Utility Association (MaVíz), Eurofins, a leader in the testing of microplastics at the international level, demonstrated to hundreds of laboratory professionals how the monitoring of microplastics can be integrated into the European Drinking Water Guidelines system in the near future.

During his presentation, Gábor Bordós, PhD, head of the Microplastics Testing Laboratory of Eurofins Analytical Services Hungary Kft., discussed our modern analytical methods covering our entire service portfolio, as well as our participation in the MicroDrink project, which focuses on building the capacity of the Danube Region regarding issues related to microplastics in drinking water treatment plants. – from source to tap.

He talked about related sampling experiments, knowledge transfer and laboratory tests (Eurofins is actively involved in the work in this area). The MicroDrink project of the Interreg Danube Region Program is co-financed by the European Union with the financial contribution of the partner states and institutions. This cross-border and cross-sector cooperation will be established with the cooperation of 9 countries, 11 project partners and 19 associated partners in 2024-2026, involving specialists, decision-makers and law-makers in the process, and drawing the attention of the wider public to this urgent environmental protection problem.

The launch meeting of the MicroDrink project was held between March 6 and 8 March, 2024, in Zagreb, and the main work packages have already been outlined, which include a review of previous literature, collection of good practices and moving on to knowledge transfer and sampling and testing of the 9 pilot areas, which will cover the karst waters, aquifers and coastal or surface filtration characteristic of the Region. Demo sampling of the project is planned to take place in October this year and will be followed by monitoring every three months for a year.

Based on the results, capacity building is then carried out, including trainings, as well as the creation of databases, guidelines and proposal packages.
