Eurofins presentation at the KSZGYSZ professional conference
The Hungarian Association of Environmental Enterprises (KSZGYSZ) organized its Current Issues of Environmental Measurement and Sampling rofessional conference for the seventh time this May. Gábor Bordós, PhD, head of the Microplastics Testing Laboratory of Eurofins Analytical Services Hungary Kft., a dedicated expert in microplastics testing, presented the regulation and standardization of microplastics testing and the related practical challenges in his presentation entitled Microplastics: from drinking water to products.
The Association is the largest Hungarian environmental protection organization and professional association, whose Measurement-Sampling Working Group - in cooperation with the Cluster of Accredited Organizations - organized the conference with the aim of clarifying current measurement technology issues from the point of view of application/applicability in practice. The goal of the organizers is to create a connection between those who carry out environmental sampling and tests, those who use the results of environmental tests, and the creators and overseers of the legal framework for the field.
At the packed house event, excellent laboratory specialists, legislators, and experts from the environmental protection authorities and representatives of other fields related to the environmental testing profession gave presentations on related topics.
Gábor Bordós, PhD, head of the Microplastics Testing Laboratory of Eurofins Analytical Services Hungary Kft., said in his presentation at the prestigious meeting: microplastics are plastic pieces smaller than 5 mm that enter the environment. They can enter our natural waters in three main ways : from washing clothes made of synthetic fabrics and from cosmetics, and from the physico-chemical breakdown of plastic waste in the environment (e.g. car tires, insulation).
In recent years, several regulations have been passed regarding microplastics present in living and drinking waters, the latest of which is the delegated decision of the Commission (EU DWD C(2024)1459), which is a supplement of the directive of the European Parliament and of the Council, delineating the methodology for the measurement of microplastics in water intended for human consumption.
The document provides both the definition of microplastics, as well as the scientific definition of each type of microplastic, measurement methods and a number of other information, which were determined by the researchers and scientists conducting microplastic tests, as well as the methodology itself, which is used to measure microplastics in water intended for human consumption.
