Global plastic pollution poses an increasing environmental and human health risk, including the occurrance of particles smaller than 5 mm in size, i.e. microplastics in the ecosystem.
Eurofins Analytical Services Hungary Kft. is at the cutting edge of microplastic research: we carry out sampling and analysis of microplastics in different environmental matrices and process waters, soft drinks down to a size of 10 µm.
Water sampling is carried out using a method developed by our laboratory.
Deploying a pump and an on-site filer cascade, a large amount of water (1-2 m3) flows through various mesh size units. We adjust the mesh size of the filters to the sampled water types, which can be:
- surface water
- drinking water
- waste water (industrial, municipal)
- technological waters
In the case of solid media, we take a grab sample, an average sample or a vertically segmented core sample with metal tools:
- from soil
- from sediments
- from sewage sludge
In our modern laboratory designed according to the special requirements for sample preparation and testing of microplastics, we determine the size and material type of the microplastics in the sample using an FTIR imaging microscope and pyrolysis GC-MS technique.
